We’re in the dog days of summer now. Those that have been on my boat have enjoyed tremendous days of catching trophy redfish, snook, and tarpon in New Smyrna Beach and Mosquito Lagoon. Summer vacations may be ending before long, but the fishing won’t cool off anytime soon. We are rolling into some of the top fishing months of the year!
Sorry, my calendar is full for July. My August calendar has openings, but there are less than 10 available. The same goes for September. Don’t wait till the day before or the week of to try find a charter during the peak busy season…try and book now or it’s likely you’ll find no availability.
It’s been all about giant bull redfish lately that are grouping up into big schools for spawning time. These trophy redfish near Mosquito Lagoon are the highlight of the end of summer and fall. The next few months are the best of the year to catch a redfish over 20 pounds when visiting the New Smyrna Beach area. We’re catching at least a few each day, with other days closer to 10 per trip. It’s only going to get better as the weeks go on. On days we change it up, we’re finding smaller redfish in creeks and on small flats In the backwaters of Mosquito Lagoon. Usually we can find a few when combining it with speckled trout fishing.
Fishing for speckled trout in Mosquito Lagoon has been picking up lately. Catching fair numbers of 18-22 inch trout daily, with usually a few over 24 inches (4-5 pounds). Some days we find a big one close to 30 inches, but seem to be tough to find this year. Most days we fish for trout in the Mosquito Lagoon backwaters yield 10-15 trout per day. Pretty much strictly fishing live bait for trout next few months.
Still been catching quality snook fishing from Daytona Beach to Edgewater. Been a bit inconsistent though as these fish move around quite a bit. Some days we find several, others we won't find but one. Big snook are grouped up to spawn right now and when that’s over they will move back into the backwaters again. Days in late August through September can be good for snook with some in the 30-40” range. Snook season is closed till September, so catch and release for the next few weeks.
Seeing lot of tarpon moving in through Ponce Inlet into the backwaters near New Smyrna Beach. Lots of fish in the 40-100 pound range showing up in schools. Have caught some nice ones up to 75 pounds on live bait and lures. Pretty tough fishery and you gotta be committed to giving it lot of time to get a bite or two. i like to give them a try when you find them and move on to other things to fish for when it’s looking like they won’t chew.
